UKKCYL VIRTUAL YOUTH FEST - 18 July 2020

UKKCYL is a platform to promote and develop the talents of our UK Knanaya Catholic Youths. Though we are going through a difficult Covid-19 phase, it also provides us with opportunities to overcome limitations and showcase our talents in accordance with the Covid-19 restrictions. We have therefore leveraged digital technology available, to proudly present, UKKCYL's first-ever VIRTUAL Youth Fest on Saturday 18th July 2020!

To help host the virtual event, we have created this new official UKKCYL website. We are also excited to stream the whole event live for everyone to watch the various performances and to support the participants.

Given the current Covid-19 restrictions, all the competition items for the Youth Fest are based on solo performances, and participants are required to virtually perform live to the judges. On the day of the event, performances will be conducted on virtual stages from 10am after the inaugural ceremony. Participants are NOT required to leave their homes but must be available to perform during their allocated time slot and have a computer/laptop with a strong internet connection. More details on the technical elements will be shared individually with each participant following the registration.

REGISTRATION - for participants only

Registration for the Youth Fest is now open! Registration must be completed and submitted by either the UKKCYL unit President, Secretary, or Female/Male Director under a single unit level form. The office-bearers have been sent the registration form. Registration is completely free.

Please contact your local unit office-bearers as soon as possible if any UKKCYL members want to participate in the event.

Each UKKCYL member is entitled to participate in at most 2 items. A maximum of 2 members will be allowed to represent a unit in each event, except for larger units* where 3 members are allowed to represent a unit. Please coordinate with your unit office-bearers to ensure you are registered on time.

*Larger units (with more than 50 members as of census completed in December 2019): Manchester, Liverpool, Northern Ireland, Birmingham, Newcastle, Leicester

Due to certain technical restrictions, we may close registration sooner for a given event if we get an influx of registration so please avoid any delays in registering.

  1. Avakaashi Thalelkett [for boys only]

The 'Avakaashi' plays an important role in a Knanaya wedding and is responsible for passing on the blessings to the next generations. The 'Thalelkett' is part of our privileges and is a great symbol of our traditions. For this event, the participant is expected to demonstrate how to properly do a 'Thalelkett' and perform the role of an Avakaashi during any one of the Knanaya wedding ceremonies. You will then be asked a very simple Knanaya-related question by the judges and given a minute to answer. The marking for this event will be based on the participants' overall performance, attire, accuracy of the Avakaashi role and quality of the answer given.

The rules for this event are:

  • Only male UKKCYL members are allowed to participate in this event.

  • The time limit for the event is maximum 2 minutes (including performance & response to question).

  • It has to be traditional.

  • Two additional support people can assist the participant for visual aid.

  1. Traditional Mylanchi Manavaati [for girls only]

The ‘Mylanchi Ideel’ is one of the main events of a Knanaya wedding and simplifies the purification of the bride-to-be. This event will enable the girls within UKKCYL to showcase their talents and expand their creativity. For this event, the participant is expected to perform an entry to their own Mylanchi and this can be done in whichever manner the participant deems appropriate i.e. dance, singing, etc. You will then be asked a very simple Knanaya-related question by the judges and given a minute to answer. The marking for this event will be based on the participants' overall performance, attire, usage of props and quality of the answer given.

The rules for this event are:

  • Only female UKKCYL members are allowed to participate in this event.

  • The time limit for the event is maximum 2 minutes (including performance & response to question).

  • It has to be traditional.

  • Two additional support people can assist the participant for visual aid.

Competition items may be updated if necessary based on changes to the Covid-19 restrictions.

PRIZES

Each competition item will have 1st, 2nd and 3rd places with £100, £75, £50 cash prizes respectively.

The winners will be announced on 18th July once all performances are complete. The winners will receive their cash prize after the event as soon as possible, and will also receive trophies during the next UKKCYL public event. Unfortunately, there will not be a Kalathilakam / Kalaprathima or best unit prizes.

Important information for participants

All participants, representing your unit in the competitions, should be a UKKCYL member according to the by-laws. All competitors should participate under the banner of their mother unit, even if he/she is living temporarily in a different Unit area for studies/work. This is because their membership will only be in the mother unit where their family live. However, as a Knanaya youth, they can involve in all the other local activities in the temporary unit where they may be currently living. If you would like to participate in the event but don't have a local UKKCYL unit, then please reach out to the directors of your nearest UKKCYL unit (the list of our UKKCYL units are given on this website) and with their consent, you can perform under their UKKCYL unit name.

Please feel free to contact any of the Executive Committee if you have any questions or need additional information.

Lastly, we would like to wish all the participants the very best and looking forward to seeing your wonderful performances!
